When it is more expensive to restock or refurbish a product, it may be cheaper for the retailer to throw the item away. Sometimes, however, repairs cost more than the product can be resold for. Horacio Villalobos/Corbis via Getty Images Managing returns is more labor-intensive than fulfilling the original order, in part because it involves inspecting the item and then repackaging it. Refurbishing returned products helps to achieve a closed-loop supply chain where products are reused rather than disposed of as waste, making the process more sustainable than buying a new item. If a warehouse worker decides the shirt in our example can be resold, the shirt will be repackaged and sent to another warehouse. Restocking and reselling means more miles Workers have to manually unpack the items, inspect them and, based on the return reason, decide what will happen next. That adds more to the cost to the company, especially in a tight labor market. ![]() Processing a return takes two to three times longer than initially shipping the item – it has to be unpacked, inspected, repacked and rerouted. Returns can travel hundreds of miles in going from the customer’s hands to a return center, sometimes back to the manufacture, and then going back into inventory for resale. The plastic, paper or cardboard from the return package becomes waste. This step of the process costs the retailer money – 66% of the cost of a $50 item by one estimate – and emits carbon dioxide as trucks and planes carry items hundreds of miles. UPS transports those items to the retailer’s warehouses dedicated to processing returns. So, you repackaged your unwanted shirt and the electric toothbrush and drove them to UPS, which has an agreement with Amazon for free returns. The 96-year-old former teacher and activist is largely credited for rallying others behind a campaign to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. In Fort Worth, Texas, the woman known as the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” Opal Lee, led her annual Walk for Freedom. For generations, Black Americans have recognized Juneteenth, but it only became a federal holiday two years ago. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they had been freed - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued during the bloody Civil War. “Is #Juneteenth the only federal holiday that some states have banned the teaching of its history and significance?” author Michelle Duster asked on Twitter, referring to measures in Florida, Oklahoma and Alabama prohibiting an Advancement Placement African American studies course or the teaching of certain concepts of race and racism. Still others have remarked at the strangeness of celebrating a federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the nation while many Americans are trying to stop parts of that history from being taught in public schools. While many have treated the long holiday weekend as a reason for a party, others urged quiet reflection on America’s often violent and oppressive treatment of its Black citizens. Americans across the country this weekend celebrated Juneteenth, marking the relatively new national holiday with cookouts, parades and other gatherings as they commemorated the end of slavery after the Civil War.
